We serve the God of second chances. I know that this is a bold statement, we serve a God who is perfect in his love and justice. How can a God who is perfect love us so much that He gives us a second chance? God does not write you off and turn away from you when you fail. God is bigger than our failures.
Moses: He kills an Egyptian, flees into the desert and becomes a shepherd for about 40 years. God gives Moses a second chance to be involved in the liberation of Israel as a nation from under their oppressors. David: The courageous young man who kills Goliath and in so doing conquers the entire Philistine army (1 Samuel 17). He sins as he covets Bathsheba and arranges to have her husband killed in battle. Read his prayer in Psalm 51. God gives him a second chance. We read that Jesus’ lineage traces back to the throne of David. Paul: The young man who hold the cloaks of the men that are busy stoning Steven (Acts 22:20), a young man full of passion and zeal. He earnestly persecuted the early church, yet God gave him a second chance. He became a great missionary and church planter and even wrote a large portion of the New Testament. What a second chance! When we have sinned we feel guilt. Guilt makes us want to hide from God, the way Adam did when God came looking for them after they had sinned. Genesis 3:9-10 “Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”” NKJV
God works despite our sin:
Hebrews 4:16 “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” NKJV We need mercy when we have sinned, it is here especially when we feel that we can’t come boldly before God. We want to hide or to stay away from God because we are reminded of our sin and shortcomings. It is exactly here when we need to accept and experience God’s amazing grace. Isaiah 42:3 “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.” NIV I love music. One of my favourite bands is “Newsboys”. In their song, “Restart” they sing about the second chance that God gives us.
I was finished, game over Couldn’t carry the weight on my shoulders At my end, in trouble Knocked down on the ground seein’ double But then Your love, love opened my eyes Lifted me up, up, now I’m alive I raise my hands, hands to the sky Singing “Oh oh oh oh oh oh” “Oh oh oh oh oh” Oh Lord, I’m a different man You gave me a second chance I was lost, I was fallin’ apart But You came along, and You hit the restart You, You, You hit the restart x2 You came along, and You hit the restart I was twisted, like bad religion Fully committed to my way of livin’ I heard the preacher, but never listened On a dead end road without a mission [Chorus] Restart, Restart, Oh Oh Oh x2 I was lost, I was fallin’ apart But You came along, and You hit the restart [Bridge:] You make all things new That’s just what You do You’re making me new
Romans 5:15 “But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!” NIV Read the rest of Romans 5 also. God has given us grace, His unmerited favour. We can do nothing to deserve this. We cannot earn His love. God reached out to us first and He continues to reach out to us. Don’t let your sin lead you away from God because you feel unworthy. You were unworthy before you sinned! You can still do nothing from you side that can make you deserve anything from God. Realize that it is undeserved and allow Him to change you through the power of His love and forgiveness.
