An introduction to prayer

Prayer needs to be an integral part of our lives. Download a PDF copy here.

Prayer is talking to God. Prayer was important to Jesus and as his disciples (followers) it should be for us as well. Jesus regularly made time to pray and spend time with God the Father.

The enemy wants to keep us off of our knees and away from prayer. Have you ever struggled to focus while praying? We need to push past the distractions and into a deeper prayer life.

Do you know that your spirit needs to be fed? Your body lets you know that it is hungry when your stomach rumbles. When you are spiritually hungry you will feel down and dissatisfied. Prayer is one of the ways that we feed our spirit and your spirit and mine needs to be fed regularly! Without prayer and drawing closer to God we start to loose our peace. Doubt and worry creep in and our faith becomes weak. We forget to put on the armour and we can no longer stand up to the enemy.

Prayer does not have to be complicated, you are speaking to someone that you cannot see. We do this often when we talk to someone on the phone. If you struggle to talk to God because you can’t see Him with your eyes then imagine that He is on the other side of a phone call. During a call we talk, but we also need to listen. Remember that prayer is not to be a one sided thing. We need to make time to listen to God as well.

The Our Father

Matthew 6:9-13 “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” NIV

This is a great place to start to learn about prayer. Go to YouTube and search for a song called “Our Father” by Michael W. Smith. Listen to it prayerfully.

The “look” method

Look up – talk to God about his greatness, his kindness and mercy. Praise Him.

Look around – talk to God about what He has done for you and for those around you. Praise Him for his faithfulness.

Look down – talk to God about your struggles and needs and ask Him for his provision and guidance.

A grocery list

Prayer is not a grocery list, 100 things that you want / need from God today. Praying for your needs is not wrong, but prayer is so much more than simply asking God for stuff.

Pray continuously

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 “Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” NIV

It is important to make alone time for us to pray to God, but you can also pray while driving to work or while washing the dishes, etc. Throughout the day we should be looking for moments when we can pray.

Prayer is a vast subject and this is only an introduction, I hope this has encouraged you to pursue prayer, remember to feed your spirit.
