Matthew 6:11 KJV
“Give us this day our daily bread.”
“Bread” is used as a symbol for provision. When we ask God to give us today our daily bread, we are asking for provision for the day ahead.
Bread is a staple food, it’s a basic necessity, not like cake or pies. It is wholesome and filling.
Jesus affirms that God is good and wants to give us good gifts:
“Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?” KJV
Matthew 7:11 KJV
“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”
Bread can be a symbol of spiritual provision as well:
John 6:33 KJV
“For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.”
John 6:35 KJV
“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”
Jesus is the spiritual bread, remember that in communion we drink wine and eat bread, symbolizing the body of Christ that was broken for us.
The believers form one loaf:
1 Corinthians 10:17 KJV
“For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.”
“Christianity is meant to be bread for daily use, not cake for special occasions.”
Bread however, is not everything in life …
Matthew 4:4 KJV
“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
